When you first hear Hot Stone, you will probably get the distinct feeling that you are listening to some sort of compilation. Not simply because of the changing band line-ups or vocalists (which include Roachford, John Turrell and Sitzka) but because in the all too brief 38 minutes, the album takes its listeners on a journey of snapshots from other decades. ‘Part of Me’ and ‘Northern Comfort’ doff their caps to soul of the 60’s and 70’s, ‘Get Away’ and ‘You’re No Good’ hark to the 1990’s and ‘Magic Beans’ sounds like a lost Blue Note song from circa 1963. Never pausing in one style for long, there’s plenty of live funky brass, George Benson styled guitar licks, a dash of rapping and three great instrumentals. The Sound of Rubberfunk is certainly that of mimicking others but it’s not necessarily a bad thing as the set of songs holds it’s own as a thoroughly enjoyable album.
